The Best Ice Cream Shops to Visit in the Lehigh Valley
The Best Ice Cream Shops to Visit in the Lehigh Valley
July 16, 2024
At Kay Builders, we're proud to be a third-generation homebuilder in the Lehigh Valley, so admittedly, we might be a little biased. But the truth is, we just LOVE this area. There’s so much to do… so much character and charm… and yes… so much great ice cream!
In these dog days of Summer, why not cool off by visiting some great local ice cream shops? We put together this list to get you started. Each store has their own special, unique delectable treats and is definitely worth a visit!
Rather than rank them for you, we invite you to try them all for yourself - and tell us which one YOU think is the best! Post your findings on social media and tag #kaybuilders in your post!
Here we go… in no particular order:
The Inside Scoop (Coopersburg, Pa)
With the first bite, you’ll immediately be amazed by the rich, creamy texture of The Inside Scoop’s homemade ice cream. Locals flock to this popular spot to enjoy traditional flavors and incredibly creative custom flavors like Mexican Spicy Chocolate and Honey Bear, a special flavor available in Summer 2024 for the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival. Enjoy the cool, 1950’s vibe inside, sit at the outdoor tables, or take your ice cream to the Southern Lehigh Living Memorial Community Park right next door. It’s definitely worth the trip south on 309 (or a short trip north from The Fields at Jacob’s Way in Harleysville!). Don’t forget to take a picture with “Chip” - a giant, 1950s-era former “Muffler Man” who welcomes you to the shop. Post your pic and remember to tag #ChipTheScoopGiant and #KayBuilders.
The Udder Bar (Allentown, Pa)
Located in Allentown’s West End Theater District just a few miles from our Laurel Field community, The Udder Bar features 40 flavors of homemade hard ice cream made right on the premises. They also offer soft serve ice cream, non-dairy/vegan ice cream, gluten free options, and shakes. Don’t miss their unique and incredibly delicious waffles and ice cream (Taco Waffle, Bubble Waffle, Liege Waffle).
OwowCow Creamery (Nockamixon and Easton, Pa)
You can’t argue with success. OwowCow Creamery has been named the 3rd best ice cream shop in the country (and 1st on the East Coast!). They’re known for their locally sourced ingredients and handcrafted ice cream with unique and bold flavors like Honey Lavender and Lemon Basil. (A little teaser… we’ll soon be building a new 55+ active adult community just a few minutes from their Easton location! Keep watching our communities page for more details.)
Just Chill Creamery (Emmaus and Whitehall, Pa)
If you’re looking for variety, check out Just Chill Creamery. They serve Leiby's and Hershey's ice cream made fresh locally, and have a tremendous selection of hard and soft ice cream, sundaes, shakes, and all kinds of delicious treats. The Banana Pudding ice cream and Peanut Butter Chocolate ice cream are popular local favorites. You could walk to Just Chill from The Fields at Indian Creek. Stay tuned for more details on our next exciting new community nearby in Upper Milford Township!
Bethlehem Dairy Store, aka "The Cup" (Bethlehem, Pa)
A local favorite for decades, The Cup offers traditional ice cream flavors and soft serve. Their ice cream sundaes and banana splits are legendary! They offer a wide variety of popular flavors and fun seasonal options like Chunky Gorilla and Blueberry Cheesecake.
King Kone (Whitehall, Pa)
Let’s put it this way… if we didn’t include King Kone on this list, we’d be hearing from a lot of Whitehall residents. It’s that popular! King Kone boasts the largest variety of ice cream flavors in the Lehigh Valley. After years at their MacArthur Road location, they recently moved right across the street to Springmill Road where they have a large outdoor deck with plenty of seating and an amazing view!

As a local homebuilder, we strongly believe in supporting local businesses. They help preserve the charm and character of this community that we love so much. While we’ve called out a few of our communities in this blog, the truth is ALL of our communities are conveniently located near ice cream shops, restaurants, parks, and tons of fun activities.
