A Local Guide to Macungie: One of the Hottest Zip Codes in America!

In August, Realtor.com unveiled their annual list of the hottest zip codes in America, and Macungie was named the 10th hottest real estate market in the ENTIRE COUNTRY! This means the Macungie area is considered one of the best places to live in the United States based on value and desirability.
This news is no surprise to those of us who live close to Macungie. It has maintained its small-town feel and open spaces even as it has grown in population and added lots of amenities, entertainment, shopping and restaurants. So living in Macungie really gives you the best of all worlds!
At Kay Builders, we’re especially excited since several of our communities are in or near Macungie including The Fields at Brookside, which is nestled along the tree-lined, private lane leading to Brookside Country Club, and The Fields at Twin Run which is in the desirable Macungie zip code while also enjoying a convenient location close to the borough of Emmaus.
So we thought we’d dig a little deeper into what makes Macungie such a great place to live, and share some of our favorite things to do and places to go in the area. Here’s our guide to Macungie, Pennsylvania:
Explore this Area’s Natural Beauty
The area around Macungie is stunningly beautiful. You have mountains with leaves that come alive with colors every autumn. Everywhere you look, there’s open spaces with parks, golf courses, recreation, hiking, and mountain biking. Living here means you are surrounded by natural beauty all day, every day.
The nearby Brenner-Penfield Macungie Mountain Preserve is a perfect example. This 47+-acre preserve features an easy, half-mile hike through a hemlock and white pine forest, while a more difficult 1.1 mile hiking trail takes you up several steep switchbacks where you’re rewarded with beautiful views. Next store is the Wildlands’ 11-acre Reimert Memorial Bird Haven, which features a wide variety of bird species.
The area is full of local parks like Kalmbach Memorial Park, where you can take educational classes and participate in various social activities, and Macungie Memorial Park & Pool, where the whole family can swim in the Summer or you and the pooch can take dog training classes. The park is also home to a number of big events including the world-renowned Das Awkscht Fescht antique car show).
Enjoy Sports and Other Recreation
The whole area around Macungie is perfect for hiking, mountain biking, road cycling, running, and walking. At Bear Creek Mountain Resort, you can ski all winter. There’s also hiking in the warmer months. Visit the spa for a day of pampering and relaxation!
There’s lots to do nearby in the Lehigh Valley too, including the Lehigh Valley Velodrome (just a few miles away) which is home to world-class cycling. Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom is tons of family fun and just a few minutes away.
Visit Coca-Cola Park (home of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs), or the PPL Center (home of the Lehigh Valley Phantoms) to cheer for the home teams. There’s lots of great food and drink both in these venues and in the neighborhoods around them.
Food, Drinks and Shopping
Speaking of food and drink, you have lots of options for dining and drinks in and around Macungie. You’ll find a mix of old and new restaurants, so you’re sure to find something to satisfy your cravings.
For fine dining, start at The Savory Grill. It has earned its reputation as one of the best restaurants in the area. They change their menu frequently to reflect seasonal offerings, so their menu always feels fresh and exciting.
The Buckeye Tavern has been a Macungie staple since 1735. It offers a wide selection of delicious food and has a great beer, wine, and cocktail selection.
The Grill at Bear Mountain is worth the trip for great food and amazing views.
Gio’s Italian Grill gives classic Italian food a fresh, new look and taste. They’re known for their tasty, hearty food. You won’t go home hungry!
Prefer to eat at home? Check out the Macungie Farmers Market for local vendors including super fresh produce.
As far as shopping goes, there are small shops all over downtown Macungie. If you prefer, you can drive just a few minutes to the popular Hamilton Crossings to find Costco, Target, and lots more dining options.
The Lehigh Valley is well-known for breweries and wineries. Rising River Brewing is a short drive away. You can sit on the deck or down by the creek as you enjoy their brews and food truck fare. McCalls Collective Taphouse (in nearby Breinigsville) is worth the drive for their high-quality brews (try their Lehigh New England IPA!).
At nearby Domaine Pterion Vineyard and Winery, they’ve restored a 283-year-old farm to create a beautiful and upscale venue and tasting room.
